6th Oc t 08McKINNEY CREAM OF THE CROP AT MOOATHON

Pauric McKinney was the runaway winner of the Mooathon Half Marathon in Donegal.

Pauric McKinney was a comfortable winner of the Mooathon Half Marathon in Donegal.

The Buncrana school teacher covered the 13.1 mile route from Kilmacrennan to Dunfanaghy in 74 minutes 45 seconds.

McKinney had almost two and a half minutes to spare over Romanian Emil Hecico who was timed at 77:13. Letterkenny GP Brian Thursby-Pelham took the minor podium spot in 79:24.

Maria McCambridge continued her preparations for the Dublin City Marathon at the end of the month with a victory in the women’s race. The Letterkenny-based Dubliner finished seventh overall of the 321 finishers in 86:40 but had Ana Hecico breathing down her neck all the way.

At the line the Romanian was just two minutes back of McCambridge after an impressive debut on the Donegal roads. Andrea Pickup from the Dulwich Runners club in London took third in 91:20.

Meanwhile in Belfast, Paul Pollock caused a major upset for the second time this month when he toppled another giant in local distance running to win the Bangor Classic 10K on Saturday.

Three weeks ago the Abbey athlete surprised former national half marathon champion Joe McAlister to win the Laganside 10K. On this occasion, it was the turn of McAlister’s arguably more illustrious St. Malachy’s club mate Gareth Turnbull to fall to the slingshot of Pollock.

“We were all more or less together until four or five kilometres and then I went away and I was always waiting on Gareth to catch me again but he never came,” said Pollock who crossed the line untroubled in 30 minutes 38 seconds.
“I’ve been running 80-100 miles a week since July and my target is to make the Irish team for the European cross-country championships in Belgium in December,” revealed the Queen’s medical student.

Turnbull who was running his first race in almost six months took second in 30:50 with McAlister just holding off veteran Dave Morwood by a second for third in 31:32.

Reigning NI cross-country champion Brian Campbell was fifth another five seconds back to complete the best quality domestic finish in years.

Suzanne McCormick was the winner of the women’s race in 37:09 with runner-up Gladys Ganiel 20 seconds back while third place went to Clare Connor in 37:57.

“We were delighted to have almost 600 runners to complete the course and put the race back on the map again,” said organiser David Seaton.

In Derry over 500 runners turned out to raise funds for the Foyle Hospice annual men’s run around the bridges. Emmett McGinty was the first finisher in a time just outside 36 minutes with Eamon Colhoun following closely.

City of Derry runners will be involved again this coming weekend when the club’s older athletes take part in the Donegal Masters’ Cross-Country Championships at Fintra near Killybegs.
