Medal Haul
Local Schools athletes were in superb form
at last Friday/Saturday,s Ulster Schools Track/Field Championships
staged in sizzling conditions at Antrim and came away with
an impressive haul of 21 individual medals plus the Thornhill
College Minor Girls sprint relay squads team bronze.
The eleven Golds,six Silver and four individual
Bronze represented one of the best all round performances
from the local schools athletes,with St Cecelias,St Columbs,,St
Marys,St Josephs,Lumen Christi,Thornhill and Limavady Grammar
represented on the honours list.
Perhaps as important as the medals is the qualifications for
the All Irelands in Tullamore in early June. Making the All
Irelands is a major achievement for Schools athletes and some
of the local Antrim qualifiers will travel south in a few
weeks time with genuine medl hopes.
Lumen Christi,s Claire Dougherty and St Columbs Ryan McParland
were very impressive double gold medallists.Competing in the
Junior category,Claire posted a marvellous High Jump/Triple
Jump double,clearing a new 1m 65cm PB in the former and setting
a new school record of 10m 16cm in the Triple Jump. Not to
be outdone,Ryan clocked a swift 22.8secs 200m and won a tight
100m Hurdles with 14.29secs.
Sisters Aoife and Roisin Laverty,running for Thornhill won
Minor 800m and Junior Long Jump golds respectively. Aoife
ran 2m 31secs to win in a photo finish after a gripping two
lapper and Roisin jumped a new PB of 5m 5cm for the Long Jump
victory,
Andrew Bolster of St Columbs was an impressive Intermediate
Boys 400m Hurdles winner in 59.95secs and also made the 400m
flat Final.There were Javelin golds from St Marys Natasha
Deane in the Junior Grade and Kelly Simpson of St Cecelias
in Senior. Natasha threw 24m 15cm and Kelly got out to a 28m
69cm winning effort.
The final two individual golds came from Triple Jumper Anna
Barr of Thornhill and ST Cecelias,Jamie Herron.Anna produced
an excellent 11m 4cm effort to take the Intermediate gold
and Jamie cleared 1m 55cm for the Senior Girls High Jump honours.
Jamie also claimed Triple Jump silver in her age group with
11m 8cm while in the Inter Boys Long Jump,St Josephs Mark
McGarvey grabbed silver with 5m 94cm and also won the 100m
Hurdles bronze with a 14.38secs clocking.In the Junior Girls
there was another trio of medallists,200m silver from Ciara
Armstrong of St Cecelias, Shot silver from Lumen Christi,s
Katie Cunningham and 1500m bronze from another Lumen athlete,Amy
Jackson.
St Columbs Sean Harkin ran well for Silver in the Inter boys
1500m Steeplechase and at Inter Girls,Thornhills Emma Gee
claimed the 80m Hurdles bronze.Finally at Senior level,Limavady
Grammar,s Daniel Reid ran 60.45 secs for 400m Hurdles silver
with Lumens Ruari Heaney taking the bronze on 61,89secs.
