May 2010SPARTANS DOMINATE
ROUND 2 OF YAL
The second round of the Northern Ireland
YAL took place last weekend at a sunny Templemore Sports Complex
with City of Derry Spartans dominating the meeting. After
leading Round 1 of the N.I. League by 200 points from Regent
House, Belfast, the Spartans were feeling very confident
The day started with the Boys & Girls
U13 sprints where Lagan Valley & Mid-Ulster gave a good
account of themselves but Jimmy O’Neill was too strong
for the opposition and went on to do the double in the 100m
& 200m. Another great double victory came from Megan Mc
Garvey in the High Jump & Long Jump. Other winners in
the U13 throwers were Scott Wylie in the Discus, Erin Coyle
in the Shot and Grainne Mullan in the Javelin.
The Girls U15 squad showed their strength in depth with great
victories from Ciara Armstrong(100m& 200m), Claire Dougherty
(High Jump & Long Jump) and Amy Jackson running another
great tactical 1500m race. In the Boys U15 1500m, Shane Mc
Gowan showed that with every race this season he is improving
and ran a very sensible race to win with ease. Other very
notable performances in the Boys U15 came from Jack Mc Closkey
who won the 100m & 200m comfortably. Multi-Eventer, Michael
Cartin did the double in the 400m & Shot.
As the day went on, the Athletics was heating up with some
fantastic performances from the Boys & Girls U17, especially
from Anna Barr and Tamara Boyle in the 300m, with Anna winning
in a time of 41.5sec closely followed by Tamara. Other notable
results came from Ryan Mc Parland in the Long Jump with a
new Personal Best of 5.99m and a 200m in 23.6 sec and Andrew
Bolster (400m) also getting a PB at each Track Meeting this
season (54.1sec). Mark Mc Garvey and Sean Harkin once again
accumulated great points for the team by winning their events.
Our two team Captains, Hannah McGowan & Dale Kelly adding
to all the victories of the day by winning their events 1500m/300m.
After two Rounds, the Spartans lead by 380 points from Regent
House with Lagan Valley lying in 3rd spot. With the next round
in Magherafelt on Wednesday 9th June, things are looking good
for the Finals on Saturday July 31st at Antrim Forum.
Congratulations to “Athletes of the Match” for
