Bows Out On A High
Jason Smyths inspiring run to the European
Championships 100m Semi Final in recent days was the athletics
headline grabber of the week, as the City of Derry Spartans
speedster wrote his name majestically all over the media, locally, nationally
and European wide as the first Paralympic athlete to compete
successfully at a major mainstream championships.
His 10.46s semi final clocking gave him a
very creditible fourth place finish, not bad for someone ranked
a lowly joint 37th going into the Barcelona championships
and he was the most sought after post race interviewee all
week at the Olympic Stadium. His talent shone brightly on
the track and his articulate modesty, equally so in the numerous
interview rooms. He was a genuine star, doing his family, his
coach, his club, his city and Irish athletics proud!
He plans a short break now before beginning preparations for
the Commonwealth Games in October and no doubt he will return
to a rousing welcome home to Eglinton--welcome back Jason, you
were magnificent!
