All Ireland Honours in Tullamore Tomorrow
Tullamore and Donegal Town are the featured
venues for local athletes this weekend,as the Midlands Stadium
hosts the ultra competitive All Ireland Track/Field Championships
tomorrow,while tonight at 7 30pm,the Donegal Town 5K is the
seventh in the County wide Grand Prix Race Series
The Donegal race comes hot on the heels of
a spate of North West road races,the Hillview 4 mile on Wednesday
night,won by the inform Scott Rankin being the latest and
race four in the Furey Insurances 5K Series,set for Culmore
next Wednesday evening at 7 30pm.
Clearly road running is on the up with big turn outs at all
local events,the Hillview race,staged in memory of the late
Foyle Valley athlete Marty Gallagher,attracted a record 98
participants on Wednesday night. Scott Rankin ran an impressive
21m 31s to lead home his Foyle Valley clubmates,Pius McIntyre
on 22m 2s and on 23m 18s,Chris McGuinness.
Former Sparta and Finn Valley star,Dawn McDaid ran 27m 39s
to win the womens race ahead of her sister Roisin O Brien
on 28m16s with Carol Ann Dillon next on 28m 59s.Last years
Hillview 4 was won by Marty Gallagher and race organisor Martin
McCallion was pleased to stage this years event in memory
of the talented Foyle valley man,tragically killed in a hit
and run accident last Halloween.
Medals targeted in Tullamore
---------------------------- The prestigius All Ireland Schools
Championships in Tullamore to morrow brings together all the
best Secondary Schools athletics in the country,among them
some very talented young locals who qualified via the recent
Ulster championships in Antrim.
All of them will travel with expectations but a handful have
genuine medal prospects. Ryan McParland in the U17 B0ys 200m
and High hurdles could be a contendor,probably over 200m;
Claire Dougherty looks good in the Girls U15 High and Triple
Jump; Anna Barr has a
chance in the U 17 Triple Jump as has Ciara Armstrong over
200m in the U15 age category.
At U17 both Long Jumper Roisin Laverty and 400m Hurdler,Andrew
Bolster are medal prospects as is Kelly Simpson in the Senior
Girls Javelin and Senior High Jumper/Triple Jumper Jamie Herron.

Finally there were some good showings from locals at Tuesday
nights Track meet at Letterkenny with the experienced Colin
Roberts clocking 9m7s for third behind Letterkenny duo,Ciaran
Doherty,8m48s and Pauric McKinney 8m58s over 3000m. Declan
Reed got back into competitive action after injury with 9m
10s and young JP Williamson ran 9m12s.
Amy McDaid won her 1500m with 5m 12s,Jacqueline McGinley ran
11m23s for 3000m and Ruari Heaney had a strong 400m.
Next Wednesday the Track/Field venue for round 3 of the Young
Athletes League will be Magherafelt where both City of Derry
Spartans and Olympian will have their squads in action as
they build towards the League Final in Antrim in July.
