Connor wins Queens 5k
Connor Bradley stormed to an outstanding success at the top
quality Queens 5K in Belfast on Wednesday night, absolutely
smashing the 15m barrier with a brilliant new 14m 46s PB and
relegating two big name athletes,2010 winner Paddy Hamilton
of Annadale and St Malachys star man Joe McAlister to the
minor places.
The Spartan stepped up on his impressive Armagh 3K win and
his Irish Indoors 3000 metres performances back in February
to destroy the high class Queens field on Wednesday evening, taking
30 seconds off his previous 5K road best as he went under
15mins for the first time with a swashbuckling 14m 46s. This
gave him a four second cushion over Hamilton with McAlister
a further two seconds behind in third place. A genuinely classy
victory for the red vest, the first winner from these parts
and confirmation that he is bang on schedule for a significant
summer season.
Last year Hamilton won unchallanged in 14m 59s, the only sub
15m clocking but this time the top four --North Downs Niall
Robinson ran 14m 55s for fourth--all broke the barrier and
confirmed the quality of the up front action. Other locals
in action included Gary Slevin,29th in 16m 15s;Cathal Logue,36th
in 16m 29s and Paul McCafferty, 51st in 17m 03s. Letterkennys
Ciaron Doherty ran 15m 07s to claim the M35 age group category
while the ubiquitious Kerry Harty led home the female finishers
with a quick 16m 36s clocking.
