12th July 2010Juveniles Stars Impress

A total of thirteen National Juvenile championship medals were brought home last weekend by the talented young athletes from City of Derry Spartans,highlighted by Hurdlers,Mark McGarvey and Ryan McParland who both struck gold in Tullamore.

The red vests were prominent across a wide range of events and age groups with the double gold,eight silver and three bronze garnered plus a batch of impressive non podium performances. McParland and McGarveys winning performances were the stand outs and confirmed their status among the top young hurdlers in the country.

McParland posted a new 100m Hurdles PB of 13.70s for an emphatic U16 win and was subsequently confirmed in the Irish Schools squad for the upcoming Schools International in Scotland. McGarvey won the same event at U17 level in 13.94s and went on to claim double silver in the 100m with an 11.38s PB and an 6m 11cm Long Jump in a rewarding day in the Midlands.

U16 star Andrew Bolster was a double medallist claiming 250m Hurdles silver with a 33.18s clocking and 100m Hurdles bronze with 14.57s. He too was selected on the Irish Schools squad and will contest the 400mHurdles in the green vest. U16 girls,Claire Dougherty and Roisin Laverty also won silver in High Jump and Long Jump respectively with leaps of 1m 64cm and 5m 03cm.

Three more silvers came at U15 level via Ruadhri O Neill (250Hurdles),Martin McGeady (Triple Jump) and Shane McGowan (800m). The bronze medals came from U15 sprinter Ciara Armstrong over 100m, and at U17 level,Sean Harkin in the 2000m Steeplechase to complete an excellent return for local athletics.

Staying with underage stars,four have been nominated to compete in September at the UK School Games. Ryan McParland,Mark McGarvey,Andrew Bolster are joined by sprinter Anna Barr in the team with Roisin Laverty named in the reserves.

Road Races
----------

Cranford Co Donegal is the venue tonight for the annual 4.2m road race which has a 7 30pm start and on Wednesday next 14th July Coleraine hosts the latest in the Spar 10k Series events. This one starts at 7pm and appears to have pulled a massive pre race enty.

The sixth and final Furey Insurances 5K Series race follows on Wednesday 21st July on the Baliniska circuit. Race HQ will be at the Sports Complex,entries taken from 6pm and there is a 7 30 pm start time for the finale of what has been a very successfull series.
