June 2010Irish Schools Golds
for Claire and Ryan in Tullamore
Claire Dougherty,s excellent High Jump/Triple
Jump double and Ryan McParland,s impressive 100m Hurdless
victory, were the golden treble from the local seven medal
haul, won at last Saturday,s All Ireland Secondary Schools
Track/Field Championships in sunny Tullamore.
Lumen Christi student Claire was in stunning
form, winning both her events easily. She cleared 1m 64cm in
the High Jump, narrowly missed a new PB at 1m 66cm and rushed
off to take her place in the Triple Jump final where she got
out to a winning 10m 02cm to complete a sgnificant double
in the Junior U15 Girls age category.
St Columb,s Ryan McParland won the Intermediate U17 Boys 100m
Hurdles in a swift 13.96secs,improving on his runners up spot
in the Ulsters and like his City of Derry Spartans clubmate
Claire, showed just why they have both been selected on the
Olympic Council of Ireland,s Junior Talent Squad which will
travel to a training camp in Romainia later this month.
Staying with the U17 Boys Mark McGarvey did brialliantly with
a leap of 6m 32cm to claim a well deserved Long Jump silver. The
St Josephs student was pipped by Ryan for an Ulster qualifying
spot in the 100m Hurdles but his long Jump silver wiil have
gone a long way to making up for that!
Natasha Deane of St Marys, expploded onto the scene with Junior
Girls Javelin gold in the Ulsters and on the much bigger national
stage she again competed briliantly, throwing 28m 65cm for
the silver medal,an excellent performance, with every likelihood
of even more to come!
A brace of bronze medals from Lumen Christi,s Katie Cunningham
and Thornhill,s Jamie Herron completed the local medal haul.Katie
threw 9m 75cm for third in the Junior Girls Shot Putt while
in a very competitive Senior Girls Triple Jump,Jamie got out
to 10m 63cm.This matched the effort of the runner up but Jamie
placed third on countback and indeed the gold was won with
a tantilisingly close 10m 69cm!
Very well done to the medallists and also to those who came
close.Anna Barr was extremely unlucky in the U17 Girls Triple
Jump,her excellent 11m 03cm giving her fourth,a mere 3cm off
the bronze. The Thornhill student however has the ability to
bounce right back and will probably do tomorrow night in Magherafelt
at the Young Athletes League round 3 meeting.
Andrew Bolster of St Colunbs ran a new 400m Hurdles PB of
59.32secs for fifth in the U17 Boys race and no doubt will
improve this again as the season unfolds,Jamie Herron cleared
1m 50cm for fourth in the High Jump,Ryan McParland was fifth
in the 200m final with a 23secs even clocking,St Cecelias
Ciara Armstrong was fifth in her Junior Girls 200m final on
26.83secs and another Lumen athlete Amy Jackson continued
her improved showings with sixth in the Junior Girls 1500m
final,posting 5m07secs.

meltdown they should go on to retain their YAL crown and o
on to represent NI once again at the UK Finals in late August.
