30th August 2011 Roberts and McCambridge Grab The Dessies Run Honours

Wednesday nights Dessies Run 10K in the Gransha grounds attracted close to 200 entries and in very good running conditions served up a top class event, as Greg Roberts reprised his 2011 win with an impressive 30km 49s victory and Letterkennys Maria McCambridge clocked a classy 33m 41s for a runaway win in the womens race.

The Spartans were dominant in the up front mens race placing six in the top seven and easily won the four to score team competition. Greg Roberts looked good throughout and was chased home by Declan Reed whose 31m 19s was a brilliant new PB. Paddy Mor Doherty ran himself out for 33m 06s for fourth and the M35 prize, after a race long tussle with Noel Logan whose 33m 09s was a another PB . Gary Slevin was next on 33m 19s with a real gutsy effort and Brendan Murphy ran 33m39s for seventh.

Foyle Valleys Scott Rankin ran extremely well for third with a significant 32m dead PB and Pius McIntyre got to within 3 seconds of Brendan Murphy with 33m 39s in eight place. Maria McCambridge underlined her 33m 41s run with ninth overall and Inishowens Joe McKinney completed the top ten with 34m 06s to claim the M40 prize.

In the womens race Gillian Wasson of Springwell took second spot on 39m 31s and in third was the Spartans Jackie McGinley on 41m 12s. The promoting club comfortably won the team race with McGinley backed up by Catherine Lilburn,41m 42s; Sarah Mahon, 43m 39s and Ciara Fraseerr, 43m 40s.

Other category winners were;M45 Gerry Duddy, 35m 20s; M50 Richard McCarthy, 38m 34s;M55 Jim Breen, 37m 23s; M60 Martin McNulty, 45m47s; M65 Christy McMonagle, 40m 50s; M U20 Dale Kelly, 40m 16s; F35 Elizabeth McDaid, 43m 40s; F40 Breege Collins ,48m 10s; F45 Lorraine Carlin, 45m 27s, F50 Gloria donaghy 45m 35s; F60 Roisin Lynch, 47m 36s.

The prizes including the Perpetual Cup for the overall winner, were presented on behalf of the McNulty family by Margaret McNulty at the post event function in the U3A Foyle premisses, which hosted the race administration.

Many of the Dessies Run participants enjoyed the post race refreshments discussing their performances on the night and looking forward to returning to Gransha for the upcoming Waterside Half Marathon on Sunday 11th September.
