9th June 2011 McGinty and Paul In Command At Culmore 5

Despite the poor weather 100 runners turned out for Wednesday nights Culmore 5K, the fourth race in the Furey Insurances series and they were led home in 16m 04s by City of Derrys Emmet McGinty with his clubmate Anne Paul clocking 18m 48s to claim the womens race honours.

Sponsered by Joe Jacksons Milk Shake Bar the event drew a huge crowd of spectators, swelled by the families of the 200 or so who participated in the 1K Fun Run which preceeeded the main event. Many of them stayed to watch the 5K and their enthusiastic support certainly helped the runners battle the elements on the exposed Culmore course.

McGinty made a welcome return to competitive action recently and was at the front from the gun with another Spartan Noel Logan. They were still together at the Arden Road crossroads with just over 2K to go but McGinty got away on the out and back on the Coney Road to win in 16m 04sto Logans 16m 22s. Decent times given the onditions and they were comfortably ahead of third placer, Foyle Valleys Pius McIntyre who won last weeks Hillview 4. McIntyre had a tough battle with Letterkennys Charlie Page but got home in 16m 56s,just three seconds clear of the tenacious Donegal man who was consoled by taking the M35 award.

Another Foyle Valley man Paddy Nicell ran 17m 24s for fifth and the M45 prize;then came a trio of red vests, James Crampsey top M40 with 17m 33s, the leading M50 Dermot Connolly in 17m 39s and the first male U20,the fast finishing Connor Doherty with 17m 39s. The top ten was completed by Foyle Valley masters Ryan Snodgrass and Brian Kelly, both given 17m 40s finishing times.

In the womens race Anne Paul belied her masters status with a gutsy effort to get away from Innishowen AC,s Karen Crossan and win in 18m 48s to her rivals 19m 02s. Third spot went to Teresa Doherty also of Inishowen on 19m 35s. Springwells Gemma Turley was next with 20m 23s followed by City of Derrys Catherine Lagan on 20m 52s and the top F50 Una Gavin also of the Spartans who posted 22m 06s.

The other Masters categories winners were, M55 Peter Lilburn with a good 18m 13s; M60 SeamusMcElhinney on 22m 55s; M65 Christy Mcmonagle with 19m 48s; F35 Katrina Ruddy on 23m 04s;F40 Bridgeen Canavan on 23m 30s; F45 Linda Hall with 24m 33s and F60 Roisin Lynch on 22m 43s.
