Commonwealth Selection for Mark and New York Win for Cathal
While the Waterside Half Marathon will dominate
the local athletics weekend action there is life elsewhere
as young City of Derry Spartans talent Mark McGarvey is in
the Isle of Man for the Commonwealth Youth Games. The St Josephs
student is part of the NI team at the prestigious games which
showcase the best U 18,s from all Commonwealth countries.
Mark has been busy of late, just back from
the UK Schools Games in Sheffield he barely had time to pack
before making the short trip across the Irish Sea to the Isle
of Man. A talented sprinter, high hurdler and jumper Mark
has had a brilliant season at provincial, national and international
level and hopefully he will close it out with more success
at the Manx venue.
Last weekend two locals Cathal and Patricia Logue were in
New York and competed in the World Trade Centre Memory 5K
Run. In a massive field of participants they ran through Manhatton
and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Cathal finished an
excellent 7th overall and won the M25-29 age group category.
Well done to both for carrying the red vest to successs.
Cross Country Season Beckons
-------------------------------------
Not long now before the new cross country season kicks into
action and among the first to hit the grass will be the local
Masters runners who are eyeing up the NiI and Irish selection
races in mid October. These races in Belfast and Dublin will
serve as trials for the Home Countries International races
in Glasgow in late November.
The NI squads will be selected at the triall race in Belfast
on Saturday 15th October while the Irish trial follows a week
later at the Gerry Farnham race in Dublin. Local Masters have
consistently made both teams and hopes are high that several
will do so again this time around.
