Bogle Makes Commonwealth Team and Young Spartans in Sheffield
Congratulations to Allan Bogle who has been
confirmed on the NI team for the Commonwealth Mountain Running
championships in Wales at the end of September. The City of
Derry athlete clinched selection for the five man 12K squad
on the back of an impressive third place finish at Saturdays
Donard race and a couple of earlier shorter distance wins.
He will hope to improve significantly before the championships
and will target the NI kingpin Des Woods of Mourne Runners
on the testing up and down North Wales course.
Congratulations also to six young Spartans
in Sheffield since Wednesday at the UK Schools Games. The
competitive action began yesterday and concludes on Sunday.
The athletes are Anna Barr who captains the NI girls squad,
Claire Dougherty,Ciara Armstrong,Mark McGarvey, Ryan McParland
and Andrew Bolster. Details of their endeavours next week
and more about Mark McGarveys impending trip to the Isle of
Man for the Commonwealth Youth Games.
The weekend road race action kicks off tonight Friday in Ballybofey
with the Sean Mac Cumhaills 5K ,starting at 7 30pm. Its the
opposite end of the island on Saturday and the National Half
Marathon championships in Waterford. The local challange for
honours will be much reduced from recent years given the location
but the evergreen Christy McMonagle will line up in search
of yet another Masters 65 success. The Spartan went well last
Wednesday night at Dessies Run and will start as gold medal
favourite in his age group tomorrow.
Letterkenny and Inishowen may have some athletes in action
as well to boost the North West challange.
