March 09LOCAL ATHLETES IMPRESS
IN OMAGH HALF
The northwest road running season kicked off
in serious with over 1500
runners reporting for action in the Omagh Half Marathon and
accompanying
four-mile Fun Run. Report from Malcolm here
Armagh man Richard Turkington and Maria McCambridge
who is now resident in Letterkenny were the impressive winners
of the half marathon titles while
local athletes picked up several of the veteran age group awards.
Like a good wine Turkington has taken time to mature and after
years on the
fringe finally landed his biggest ever success in a time of
70 minutes 15
seconds. However, the manner of the execution suggests it may
not be long
before the 34-year-old makes a return to the winner's dais.
Turkington allowed Letterkenny duo Pauric McKinney, Gary Crossan
and Abbey's Turlough Donnelly to do most of the pace-making
before drawing away in the final miles for a more comfortable
win than the eight second margin of victory would suggest. Buncrana
National School teacher McKinney challenged right to the line
but never looked like catching his rival. Exactly a half a minute
back his club mate Crossan maintained a slender two second advantage
over Donnelly in a battle for the bronze medal spot that went
right to the line.
Marty Gallagher was the first local runner after crossing the
line in
thirteenth place. The young Foyle Valley athlete has only been
running a
little over a year and his time of 75:35 knocked over five minutes
off his
previous best.
Gallagher who is regularly logging 70 - 80 miles per week under
the guidance
of his coach, Gabriel Bell, has his sights set on the London
Marathon in
just under five weeks.
Hot on his heels was City of Derry's Damian McGinty who finished
just one
place back with a 75:53 clocking to win the M45 category. Club
mate Jamesie
Campsey took fifteenth in 76:42 to cap his recovery from a prolonged
injury
and secure third place in the M40s race.
Dungannon-based Donal Gallagher made a welcome return to City
colours with a fine run in 74:11. Sammy McAnaney showed he had
wintered well too with a
runner-up spot in the M50 age group in 78:28. Oliver McCulllagh
made it a
City double taking the top M55 prize in 100:50 for his most
important
victory to date.
Maria McCambridge was disappointed in the women's race despite
coming home over three minutes clear of her nearest opponent
clocking 77:03. With the Paris Marathon only a fortnight away,
the Athens Olympian put her lacklustre performance down to an
excess of training mileage. She will now taper down in the next
two weeks and hope, in theatrical parlance, it will be alright
on the night.
City's Anne Paul had another super consistent run to take fourth
for a win
in the F40 category. Derry woman Lisa Tracey, now running in
the colours of
North Belfast Harriers, took fifth in 88:41 and Paula McGilloway
lifted the
top F45 prize.
Paul Hannan was a facile winner of the Wheelchair race from
Inishowen man
Karol Doherty. European Youth Olympics silver medallist Noel
Collins revved
up for the impending track season by coming home well clear
in the four mile
Fun Run in 20:55 ahead of City's Kevin Carlin and John Paul
Williamson in
third and fourth respectively.
The road season continues this weekend with the Larne Half Marathon
on
Saturday.
