Athletes take the Honours in Donegal 10K
Finn Valley athletes made a clean sweep of
the top three places at the 12th North West Charity 10k in a
sun-soaked Letterkenny.
Amid traffic congestion Kevin Holian repeated
his success of 2006 when he had just four seconds to spare at
the tape over Kieran Carlin with a time of 33 minutes 34 seconds,
well outside Noel Berkley’s 1998 record of 29:14.
Newcomer to the Donegal club’s colours, Darren
Bentley, took third some way back in 35:08.
Irish Olympian Maria McCambridge who claimed
it would be her last 10K was fourth across the line in 35:30
to gain victory in the women’s race. Theresa McGloin was second
in 38:59 to cap a successful day for the Finn Valley club.
City of Derry’s Kevin Carlin (36:51) was the
winner of the Junior Men’s race with Neil Faulkner (35:34) leading
the Masters’ home.
Margaret Kelly was the leading female Master
with a creditable 40:50 clocking. Former winner Kay Byrne took
the women’s over 40 category in 40:50
Over 1400 runners and walkers took part with
the money raised being distributed among a number of local charities.
