Hectic Period ahead for local athletes

The Donegal 10K marked the start of a hectic period for northwest road runners with races coming thick and fast in the next few weeks.

The Culdaff 5K on Friday night (7:30) is the next on the list with a mile contest for juveniles also scheduled at the same time.

Gregory Roberts has started the season in impressive fashion with a victory in the opening Furey Insurance 5K before taking runner-up spot in the University Challenge over the same distance at Coleraine behind three-time Waterside Half Marathon winner Paul Rowan.

However, the City of Derry Spartan should face strong opposition from a large Donegal contingent who will be looking to collect points in the O’Donnell county’s Road Race Grand Prix. Letterkenny duo Gary Crossan and Pauric McKinney have been in excellent form over the cross country and will be looking to convert that form onto the roads.

Last year’s winner Declan McCarthy will also be in the field and in search of the top Masters’ prize while Helena Crossan is likely to defend her women’s title.

Five days later (May 14) sees the second race of the Furey Insurance Series with the popular Lisnagelvin fixture(poster) being restored to the calendar after the absence of a couple of years.

The Ballyshannon 5K is the following Friday (16th) with one of the top races in the Northwest, the Letterkenny Inter-Firms Race, down for decision on May 22.

There is no respite with Wilkie’s Run two days later and the Furey Brothers, Eoghan and Dara, sending out an open invitation to all to compete in the Buncrana 5 on May 28. Last year the race had 155 finishers and Furey’s are keen to take that number to over 200 in 2008.

Meanwhile the Enniskillen 10K (June 21) and Strabane 10K (July 5) await in the not too distant future).
