16th Sept 08 WATERSIDE HALF

Bright autumn sunshine, temperatures in the high teens with a cooling breeze. The perfect day for a stroll in the country. Those must have been the thoughts of former Irish champion Joe McAlister as he sauntered to victory in the Tesco Waterside Half Marathon in Derry on Saturday morning.

A casual observer could have been forgiven for mistaking the McAlister for someone on a training run such was the ease with which the St. Malachy’s clubman disposed of the opposition.

After a shock defeat in the Laganside 10K the week before, the Glengormley teacher was clearly in no mood for a repeat as he forged into a lead by the end of the first mile.

He continued to stretch away to beyond the halfway point before relaxing on the homeward journey to cross the line over three and a half minutes clear of his nearest pursuer. It was his third win in the event and never will he have earned £500 as easily for just 70 minutes 14 seconds work.

If it appeared a dawdle for the winner, the same could not be said for the runner-up Martin Rea with three men fighting out the silver medal place right down to the finish line.

The trio were running shoulder to shoulder throughout the final miles but the greater strength of the North Belfast Harrier Martin Rea eventually told as he managed to get home by a mere three seconds from the City of Derry’s Declan Reed in a time of 73 minutes 50 seconds.

Last year’s runner-up Delfim Pimentel on this occasion had to settle for fourth a further ten seconds back while further down the field Derry boxer John Duddy completed the 13.1 mile course in one hour 41 minutes and 57 seconds.

Seldom does a women’s road race in the North have two Olympians but that was the case here. Ireland’s 5000 metres representative in Athens, Maria McCambridge, outdistancing Paul Curley who only four weeks previously was valiantly completing the marathon in the heat and humidity of Beijing.

On this occasion the Tullamore woman obviously still recovering from her exertions in China offered only token resistance to McCambridge who finished in an impressive 76 minutes and 17 seconds for seventh place overall.
Curley was timed at 79:02 with third place going to Sperrin Harrier Karen Alexander in 83:05. Paul Hannan and Jim Corbett crossed the line together in the Wheelchair race with Karol Doherty in third.

With over 600 finishers and slick organisation the Derry race enhanced its claims for restoration of NI championship status withdrawn when the event was cancelled at the eleventh hour two years ago when police permission for the route was not forthcoming.

Meanwhile Ireland’s fastest man Paul Hession concluded his season in fine style when he finished second in the 200 metres at the World Athletics Finals at Stuttgart. Hession clocked 20.58 seconds losing out on the $30,000 winner’s cheque by a mere hundredths of a second to Stepháne Buckland of Mauritius.
