Sept 08McALISTER TO BOUNCE BACK
IN WATERSIDE HALF
Joe McAlister starts favourite to pull off
his third win in the TESCO Waterside Half Marathon on Saturday.
Last year McAlister won by six minutes as over 600 runners completed
the 13.1 mile course around Gransha, Strathfoyle and Maydown.
The St. Malachy's athlete suffered a shock
defeat in last weekend's SPAR Laganside 10K at the hands of
Paul Pollock.
Normally Pollock adopts kamikaze tactics which see him rush
to the front in practically all of his local appearances on
the track, cross-country and road only to often fade out of
contention when the chips are down.
However, the Abbey athlete ran a much more controlled race to
see off the challenges of McAlister and a determined Omagh Harrier
Stephen Duncan to add to his success the previous weekend in
the Crawfordsburn 5K Trail race.
After the race the St. Malachy's athlete, who was at a loss
to remember the last time he was beaten on the roads in the
North, offered no excuse for his defeat other than to say Pollock
ran well. He also stated that he was happy with his time of
31 minutes one second given that he has not yet started his
speedwork.
He also added that did not expect the half marathon to provide
the same jolt to the system that the sharper 10K had given him
on the swift Ormeau circuit.
Main local opposition to the Belfast man will come from Diarmuid
Grant who has just returned from a holiday in Turkey and will
be hoping to get in a few crucial sessions before Saturday's
test.
Since winning last year's women's race Pauline Curley has gone
on to fame if not fortune. Twelve months ago the Tullamore Harrier
strolled home seventh overall and easily disposing of all the
female opposition.
Since then the 39-year-old has appeared at the Olympics completing
the testing Beijing course in 2:47.16 for 63rd position. Curley
has yet to confirm her participation but Race Secretary Gerry
Lynch is pulling out all the stops to ensure she makes the journey
north to toe the line on Saturday.
However, last year's runner-up Lucy Brennan from Sligo is almost
certainly sure to start and City of Derry's Anne Paul, third
last year, carries local hopes.
One woman who won't be on the line is Kerry Harty who completed
an arduous but successful weekend with a comfortable victory
in the Laganside in 35 minutes 35 seconds.
The Newcastle athlete who is coached by Richard Rodgers won
the 800 metres for her English club Windsor, Slough & Eton
at BAL Cup Final in England on Saturday with a personal best
time of 2:10.4. Later she contributed a 58.4 split in the 4
x 400 metres relay before taking the plane back to Belfast.
However, there was no sign of any fatigue when Harty took up
the running after two kilometres before pulling away to win
comfortably. Only delays encountered when lapping backmarkers
prevented her from setting a new personal best, ending up two
seconds outside her clocking last year in the Joe Seeley 10K.
The organisers hope to have 1000 runners lining up for action
for this, the 27th edition of the race. Race start time for
Half Marathon and Team Relay is 10:30am. The Fun Run within
the Gransha grounds starts some five minutes later.
