28th Oct 08DUTCH DELIGHT FOR DERRY RUNNERS

A strong wind along the River Amstel particularly approaching the half marathon mark did not prevent a number of local runners from recording impressive times at the Amsterdam Marathon.

Kenyans Paul Kirui and Lydia Cheromei were victorious in the 33rd edition of the race. Kirui, the 2004 World Half Marathon champion who has a personal best of 2:06:44 from 2006 for the distance clocked a time of 2:07:52. Cheromei, running her first marathon, crossed the finish line at the 80-year-old Olympic stadium in an impressive 2:25:57.

City of Derry Chairman Sean Laverty was the leading local and broke three hours with an official time of 2:55:02. Martin Gallagher was desperately unlucky to finish just outside that time with a 3:00:16 clocking. Philip Bradley followed up an impressive summer season to record 3:03:30.

Other local runners to finish included Clive Austin (3:21:01), Michael Clifford (3:23:33), Ryan Snodgrass (3:38:14), Tom Doherty (3:38:36), Alistair Laird (3:46:15), Liam Ryan (3:58:52), Hugo Hegarty (3:58:47) and Colm Colhoun (4:58:53).

Martin Dunleavy helped Pauline Laverty around the Half-Marathon race held in conjunction with the race and both had a net time of 1:45:30. Joe Pewtner clocked a net 1:46:49 and Denise Doherty will have been pleased with her 1:56:07.

Young Gareth Ryan was also in action covering the 7.5K Fun Run in 31:36 and will have gained invaluable experience.

The younger athletes will also be in action later on the week when the first races in the Primary School League take place at Templemore on Friday. The action gets under way at 1:30 and NW Athletics Development Officer Elaine McCaffrey would be glad of any assistance in marshalling the course and recording the finishers.
