9th Oct 08McCARTHY SHINES IN EARLY START

Declan McCarthy opened up his winter season with an excellent third place in the Donegal Masters’ Cross-Country Championships at the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar

Declan McCarthy opened the cross-country season with a third place in the Donegal Masters' Championships.

The City of Derry athlete who competes in the trials for the Northern Ireland team for the Masters’ International in ten days was off to a strong start from the gun.

Reveling in the flat terrain McCarthy held on to the bronze medal position while Letterkenny’s Jonathon Patton, a newcomer to the Masters’ ranks, drew away for a convincing victory.

Two other City athletes took the opportunity to make an early start to the harrier season with former international boxer Gerry Duddy taking tenth and Christy McMonagle 23rd.

Unfortunately due to the late withdrawal of Sammy McAnaney through injury the club was unable to field the prerequisite four runners to score in the team race won by Letterkenny.

Margaret Kelly was the winner of the female Masters’ race with Tirconnell running out team winners.

Meanwhile, former City of Derry athlete Cathy McCourt was an easy winner of yesterday’s women-only Belfast Telegraph Runher 8K with a gun to tape victory around the Ormeau Park circuit.

The 35-year-old air hostess only decided to compete at the last minute and was rewarded with her most prestigious victory to date.

Cathy McCourt breaks the tape to win the Belfast Telegraph Runher 5 Miles.

“I had been very unhappy with my run at the Bangor 10k last week-end and I hadn’t been feeling in great form all week but despite a long run yesterday I decided to give it a go,” said McCourt whose father Jim was a Commonwealth Boxing champion.

McCourt clocked 30 minutes 13 seconds, just over a minute outside her personal best, for the distance which is equivalent to 5 miles in imperial measurement.

She was followed home 38 seconds later by the pre-race favourite Roberta Dornan who was a surprise winner of the Runher 5K back in June. Third place went to Judith Lowry a further 42 seconds back in third.

However, first across the line In fact was Fermanagh’s Paralympian Karen Cromie who powered her hand cycle round in an impressive 27 minutes 42 seconds.

Over 600 finished the Up and Running-sponsored event which enjoyed unseasonal sunshine and raised thousands for the CLIC Sargent for children with cancer. Among the local celebs to finish were Dame Mary Peters, world champion blind water-skier Janet Gray, Stormont Assembly MLA Dawn Purvis, UTV presenter Siobhan McGarry and Cool FM presenter Kirstie McMurray.
