19th Oct 08CITY MASTERS IN COMBER

It is an early wake-up call for City of Derry’s veterans this weekend with the cross-country season hardly started and the Comber Cup serving as the trial for Northern Ireland teams at next month’s Masters’ International in Swansea.

The Derry club generally provides four or five athletes for the Ni selections and this year looks no different with one Spartan already assured of selection.

Knowing that she would be on honeymoon this weekend, the NI Veterans’ Association have already confirmed the selection of Jackie (McMonagle) McGinley for the women’s over 40 team.

It will not be so easy for the rest of City’s hopefuls who face a long trudge around the grounds of the Billy Neill Soccer Centre to ensure a place on the plane to Wales.

Declan McCarthy looks to be assured a spot on the men’s M45 squad following a fine bronzed medal performance in the recent Donegal Championships while Gerry Lynch (M60) and Sammy McAnaney (M50) will looking to recover from injury in time to seal selection for their respective age groups.

Everest conqueror Hannah Shields should also do enough to make the women’s F45 quartet.

Meanwhile Irish Mountain Running champion Stephen Duncan was an impressive winner of the Armagh 10 Miles which along with the ancillary Fun Run attracted an entry of almost 1000 runners.

Aided by almost perfect running conditions, the Omagh Harrier broke the tape over a minute ahead of his nearest pursuer in 51 minutes 53 seconds. Second place went to Alan McCullough in 53:28 with James McIlroy who represented Britain at this year’s World Indoor Championships just getting the better of the incredible 50-year-old Dermot Kerr by eight seconds for the bronze spot in 54:34.

Letterkenny-based Maria McCambridge was an even more emphatic winner of the women’s race. After covering the ten mile loop as a warm-up before the race, the Dundrum South Dublin athlete proceeded to finish in 13th place overall in 56:54.

Kerry Harty continued a hectic racing programme which has seen her in Cork and Dublin in recent weekends by taking second in 59:58. Third spot went Abbey’s Gladys Ganiel O’Neill in 61:09.
