27th Sept 08JASON TO CONSIDER BLADE CHALLENGE

Jason Smyth’s victories in Beijing have catapulted the modest Eglinton man onto the World stage with offers coming in from all parts of the globe.

Without a major Paralympic event next year Smyth will be free to develop his career in open athletics with the European U23 Championships in Kaunas, Latvia featuring at the top of his 2009 agenda.

“You can’t believe the response there’s been to Jason’s performances,” said Coach Stephen Maguire.

“Even in Beijing we have been absolutely inundated with offers for the indoor season and the summer of 2009.”

One of the more interesting invitations is to come in is an offer to go to South Africa and race-off against Oscar Pistorius although the details of the challenge are far from clear at the moment.

Better known as Blade Runner on account of the special prosthetics he uses, Pistorius took three gold medals in the amputee category (T44) at the Paralympics.

The 22-year-old South African has also been described as “the World’s fastest man on no legs” after being born with a congenital absence of fibulas in both legs which necessitated having both legs amputated halfway between the knee and ankle when he was just 11 months.

He fought a long protracted battle with Athletics governing body, the IAAF, before being declared eligible to compete in the mainstream Olympics. However, he failed to gain the required qualifying time for the individual 400 metres and was not selected either for the 4 x 400 metres relay in Beijing by South Africa as the country had four faster runners for the distance.

“We’re going to South Africa anyway in February for a month’s training and we’re going to give the offer some thought. Certainly the agent of Pistorius is pushing it very hard with World television rights and global exposure,” revealed Maguire.

Meanwhile Smyth is receiving treatment for the hamstring injury that affected his warm-up for the 200 metres in Beijing and will miss the special 100 metres race on Saturday week (October 4) organised as part of the Great North Run weekend.
