27th Sept 08Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon

Next year’s Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon will be bigger, better with lots more entertainment. That was the promise of Danny O’Connor, Chairman of the Organising Committee, at the launch of the 2009 event at the Premier Inn in Belfast.

O’Connor confirmed that the May Day Bank Holiday race is now the largest mass participation event in Northern Ireland with over 15,000 participants this year. He also estimated that at least another 30,000 people had cheered on the runners along the streets of Belfast and at the carnival in Ormeau Park where the race had finished.

She's behind you!!!!!!!!! May McFetridge launches the 2009 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon which will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Trust charity.

Among others he paid tribute to his team at Belfast City Council who had “gone the extra mile” in making the event the “success story” that it is, having beaten all records for participation in each of the last seven years.

He said that the course would remain the same for next year taking in all four corners of the city. In addition to providing more entertainment along the route and at the finish, he invited businesses along the route to get involved in making the whole event a huge civic carnival.

O’Connor confirmed that a £1000 bonus would continue to be available to anyone who broke the record in either of the men’s or women’s races. And there would be improved cash awards for the leading NI finishers in both the major categories.

It was also revealed that the 2008 race had raised approximately £500,000 for deserving causes and that the nominated charity in 2009 would be the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. May McFettridge who is a patron of the Charity was also on hand to launch the latest edition. Oh no she wasn’t! Oh yes she was!

The popular local pantomime queen claimed to have once completed three marathons in the course of a day. But added that was before they changed the name to SNICKERS.

On a more serious note May McFetridge, the alter ego of comedian John Linehan, praised the work done by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and urged everyone to get involved in raising much-needed funding by taking part, if not the marathon itself, in either the FUN RUN or team relay.

Although the prize money for the prize awards for the winners of the men’s and women’s race had not been increased John Allen, Secretary of the Northern Ireland Athletics Federation who provide the officials, was confident that the quality at the sharp end of the race would be improved.

“This is something we have been working on quietly for a number of years and we are making progress. Although Marty Deane’s record in the men’s race goes back to 1986 we have seen several improvements in the women’s best in recent years,” said Allen.

The organisers have also revamped their website at www.belfastcitymarathon.com and urged all would-be competitors to get their entries in early. To encourage this all those received by November 9 would receive a 10% discount.

Inevitably the last word went to May McFetridge who said, “It’ll be great to see so many people running around the streets of Belfast for the right reasons!”
