19th Oct 08ALLAN REIGNS IN SPAIN

They must be putting something in the water out in Eglinton. The dust has hardly settled on Jason Smyth’s exploits in Beijing when another athlete from the village wins an important race in Spain.

Allan Bogle who left the northwest a little over a year ago to take up a teaching post in Gran Canaria showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition to win the Las Palmas Extreme Mountain Half Marathon by more than six minutes in 78 minutes 23 seconds.

Allan Bogle (Centre) receives his award after winning the Extreme Half Marathon in Gran Canaria.

The City of Derry who is also a British Orienteering international had been training for a half marathon in the island which was due to take place in November but when it was cancelled he decided at the last minute to tackle what is one of the toughest races in Spain.

“I had been training for the half marathon but three weeks ago I found out it has been postponed to after the New Year,” revealed Bogle.

“I felt like I was in good shape to run a half marathon so I decided to enter the Mountain Half Marathon. The race began along the beach in Las Palmas for the first three kilometres and then into the mountains surrounding the city, winding its way along mountain bike trails, before doubling back on its self at the half way mark.

“I lead the race start to finish, and recorded nearly identical splits for each kilometre 3min 44sec. I came into the finish 6 minutes ahead of the second placed runner.”

However, acclimatising to running in the Canaries has not been easy on account of the climatic idiosyncrasies of the islands as well as the temperatures which can go into the thirties even in the winter.

“Running here is very different to back home, it has taken me a year to get used to the temperature and how dry the air is. Last year I had a few successful races, particularly when it was a little cooler,” said the former Limavady Grammar School pupil.

“Gran Canaria suffers from dust storms that blow in from Africa, last year I ran a race during one of these storms and developed a chest infection which ruined the rest of the season, and meant I couldn’t run the NI Senior cross-country in which I had finished third in 2007.

“This year if everything goes to plan I hope to be back in Northern Ireland competing for City of Derry in the NI Senior and plan to be in Greencastle on St. Stephen’s Day,” added Bogle.
