27th Sept 08MORRISON GOES FOR WORLD CUP

Aileen Morrison is Ireland’s sole representative at the eleventh round of the BG Triathlon World Cup in Lorient, France tomorrow.

It is the first time Lorient will host a World Cup fixture and in all 25 Olympians from the Beijing Olympics will be chasing the $250,000 (£135,000) bonus pool.

The Derry woman faces the daunting challenge of a 1500 metres swim followed by 40 kilometres (25 miles) on the bike and concluding with a ten kilometre run (6.1 miles).

Derry woman Aileen Morrison is Ireland's sole representative in tomorrow's BG Triathlon World Cup in Lorient, France.

Morrison faces Felicity Abram from Australia who has already four World Cup podium places under her belt this year and maintains the number one ranking globally. Kiwi Sam Warriner is also in the field and will be looking to atone for disappointing 16th place finish in Beijing having earlier won the South Korea leg of the series.

Britain will be represented by Jodie Swallow and Angela Whitcombe who are both well known to both local Athletics and Triathlon followers.

However, Morrison goes into the event on the back of her best ever performance after finishing twelfth two weeks ago in a European circuit event in Austria which included ten of the top 20 finishers in Beijing.

The performance capped a breakthrough year for the former John Moore’s University student who left her post of NW Athletics Development Officer to go back to college and secure a teaching qualification.

She has made phenomenal progress since her baptism on the European circuit back in May at Brno in the Czech Republic after which she ranked a modest 73rd in Europe.

Despite having her training curtailed by a persistent foot injury she has climbed into the top twenty following some impressive performances across the continent.

Highlights of the summer included a victory in the Mullaghmore Triathlon in Sligo and a top 15 at the World University Games in Turkey.

Her family and friends were able to cheer her to an excellent sixth in Athlone when the European tour came to Ireland but better was to come in Croatia where she secured her first podium finish taking third to move herself up to the dizzy heights of 17th in Europe!

With another confidence-boosting result in Vienna two weeks ago it is now time for another step up in class for Morrison who is now based in Lisburn to avail of the training facilities offered there.

“It’s my first World Cup event, with the biggest start list of all, the start list reads like a who’s who of triathlon. It’s real scary stuff,” revealed Morrison.

Meanwhile, Joe McAlister will need to see off a strong challenge from St. Malachy’s clubmate Gareth Turnbull if he is to defend his Bangor 10K tomorrow. Pauline Curley who represented Ireland in the Olympic Marathon in Beijing starts favourite for the women’s race. The starter’s gun is set to fire at midday with entries taken in Bangor Leisure Centre prior the event.
