2nd
June 08 City at U/age Ulster
Championships
City of Derry travelled to the Finn Valley Centre with 10 under
13 athletes and returned with a total 6 medals. One Gold, 4
Silver and 1 Bronze.
Ruaidhri O Neill was the only
Ulster Title when he was placed 1st in the under 13 High Jump,
this followed an excellent 2nd place run in the 80m Hurdles.
Ciara Armstrong was the other
double medallist. She had a very strong run to finish 2nd in
the U13 80m and was lucky in the Long Jump when she finally
hit the board in her final jump to claim the bronze medal.
In the boys U13 80m Conor Breslin
came strongly through the heats and in the final came very close
to claiming the title but should be well satisfied with a Silver
and qualification for the All-Irelands.
In the U12 section Mathew Doherty
had a very exciting race in the 500m and was only beaten into
2nd place in the home straight.
Hard Luck storey of the day
was Jimmy O’ Neill in the boys U11 500m. Jimmy easily won his
heat but lost out on a medal, which were awarded to faster times
in the other heats.
In the middle distance events
Tiarnan Brady probably would have medaled if it was not for
a bad fall in the first lap.
Other athlete to perform well
on the day was Shane Mc Gowan and Alisha Mc Laren in the 600m,
Eoin Robinson in the Long Jump and Obaro Diegbe in the High
Jump.
