City of Derry men ended the summer season on a high with an excellent third place finish at the National Track & Field League Final in Tullamore.

Making their first appearance at this level for more than a decade, the Spartans finished on 95 points, five shy of Belfast rivals Abbey.  A selection drawn from all the clubs in County Tipperary and featuring two-time Olympian Gary Ryan were comfortable winners on the 106 points mark.

Top performer of the day for City of Derry was Tom Carey with two individual victories.  The Peterborough-based athlete also ran vital legs in both relays to help City to two runner-up spots.

Tom Carey Clears the Final Hurdle in 110m Hurdles

Carey opened his account with a smooth win in the 110 metres hurdles in 14.8 seconds before grabbing maximum points in the 400 metres thirty minutes later.

City’s other individual success came from Aaron Carlyle who overcame blustery winds to record a fine 49.88 seconds clocking in the 400 metres.  With Jason Smyth at the Paralympics in Finland, the Manchester University student filled in over 200 metres taking fourth in 22.5 seconds.

Another busy man was Rudi Moore who was second in the long jump with a 6.26 metre effort before taking fourth places in the 100 metres in 11.4 seconds and the javelin with a throw of 39.54 metres.

Other athletes to take runner-up spots were Conor Bradley (800m/1:55.5) and Simon Herron (high jump/1.85m).

Eoghan Furey, Greg Roberts, Seamus Kealey, Jim Herron and young Igho Diegbe also scored valuable points.

In the final event of the day, Carlyle, Carey, Moore and Bradley combined well to set a new City of Derry record in the 4 x 400 metres relay of three minutes 23.5 seconds.

Northern clubs had their best ever day at the meeting with Abbey following in the footsteps of Lisburn, Ballymena and Tirchonnaill by becoming only the fourth Ulster side to win the women’s Premier title.

In the men’s Premier final, North Down were runners-up after a tough contest with Crusaders from Dublin.
