Local youngsters will have the opportunity this summer to take the first steps on a road to Olympic glory in 2012..  City of Derry Athletics Club is looking for budding athletes to give them the opportunity to put his or her foot on the first rung to athletics success.

The Derry club in conjunction with Olympian and St. Columb’s College athletics clubs is organising a one week course at Templemore from 15 – 19 August for the 8 – 15 age group.  The aim of the star:track scheme is to provide a summer opportunity for children of all standards to acquire and develop the athletics skills within a structured and exciting framework with the emphasis on fun learning.

The format of the course emerged as a concept eleven years ago in order to harvest the interest generated by the major athletic championships each year. ‘star:track’ was a fun introduction to athletics for 8 to 13 year olds and in the first year 8000 children took part at 78 venues including Templemore.

Since then star:track has developed into an all year round athletics experience for children between the age of 8 and 15 regardless of ability, gender or ethnic background. Last year over 20,000 took part at over 240 venues.

A number of local athletes who started in the sport through star:track before going on to compete at international level.  These include Rudi Moore, Trevor McGlynn from Strabane and Michelle Doherty.  In fact Rudi and Michelle have gone full circle in the sense that both have returned to coach at the course. Now studying architecture at Loughborough, Rudi will be in charge again this year and will specialise in the sprints and jumps.

All star:track recruits will get a goody bag which contains a host of articles including customised tee-shirt, drinks bottle, backpack and diary. So local parents now have the opportunity to get their little Kelly Holmes or Mark Lewis Francis off their hands for a week - you never know it may just be his or her first step on the road to the Olympics in London seven years from now!

Full details of the course and entry forms are available at Templemore Sports Complex or on the internet at www.sparta-athletics.co.uk.  Postal applications are welcome but registration also takes place at Templemore at 9:30 am on Monday, 15th August.  The cost for the course which runs from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm each day is £25 per child.
