Aug 08SMYTH READY FOR CHINA
TEST
Jason Smyth has declared himself fit and ready
in advance of the Paralympics which start in Beijing tomorrow.
The City of Derry sprinter is joined in Beijing by Belfast’s
Michael McKillop with the pair expected to lift three gold medals
in the course of the next ten days.
“It’s been a long summer and it’s been a long build-up but I
think I’m ready now. We settled in really quickly here and I’ve
been able to get in some good sharpening sessions. With this
following just after the Olympics it has motivated me get out
on the track and see what I can do,” said Smyth who is favoured
to win both the 100 and 200 metres in the T13 (partially sighted)
category.
Despite having his season interrupted by the weather, injury
and the unfortunate death of the father of his coach, Stephen
Maguire, the 21-year-old Eglinton man believes he has prepared
well for his date with destiny.
“We didn’t get it 100% the way we had planned but we still got
the most of it done. Things did crop up; I had a slight injury
at the start of June which made me have to pull out of a good
race. Then the weather at home did not help and there wasn’t
that much competition around with the Olympics being on.
“Overall it has gone well although we would liked to have got
another race or two in but what can you do. Nevertheless, we
are still happy where we are.”
Coach Maguire has planned meticulously the final phase for his
protégé in advance of his first day of competition.
Both he and Smyth made the long journey to China twelve months
ago to familiarize themselves with the weather at this time
of year as well as checking out a suitable hotel to use as a
base for the crucial final sharpening sessions on the track.
“We stayed for a week at our hotel which has a track just five
minutes away before moving into the Paralympics village. Jason
is happy he will be able to take part in the opening ceremony
because he does not get into action until the 13th (September)
which is at the back end of the schedule,” said Maguire.
“He has the heats and final of the 100 metres on the 13th and
then he’s competing again on the 15th and 16th with the heats
and final of the 200 metres,” he added.
Meanwhile Smyth dismissed any notion of succumbing to the pressure
of being hot favourite to take the gold medal in both sprints.
“I’d shrug that off, I don’t think about it or look much into
it. I just concentrate on what I have to do and not get worried
because anything else is just a distraction and you gotta keep
focused.”
Michael McKillop has also reportedly travelled well and quickly
settled into his new environment. He opens up on Tuesday (9th)
when he competes in the 800 metres in the T37 category in which
he is defending World champion and record holder.
