31st July 08FureyFurey 5K Series Showdown in Muff

This Saturday is the final race in the Furey Insurances 5k Series 2008. Race number 7 sees the series return to Inis Eoghain, this time to the border village of Muff. The race has a 2pm start and the prizes are sponsored by the Muff festival which takes place over the weekend. Registration takes place from 12.30 in St Mary’s Hall and the prize giving for the race and the overall series will take place after the race in the Squealing Pig Pub in Muff. Note, the Series t-shirts for those who have completed at least 5 races this year will be given out at registration.

The 2008 series has been the largest yet since it was launched as the Bob Mullan 5K Series in 2001 by Malcolm McCausland. So far this year over 300 different athletes have taken part in the series with an average of 96 runners per race.

The overall prizes for the series have also been hotly contested, but with 5 races out of 7 to count for scoring purposes, it was not until after the jog in the bog (Race 6) that the title race became clear.

An interesting point to note is that there are two main categories of prizes. The overall series prize, (open to everyone) and the Veterans Age-graded prize. If a veteran athlete gets into the top two in the Open category then they will only get that prize and the next athlete in the Age graded will be moved up a position. Confused?

Veteran women – Age graded (Top 2 only get a prize!)
1/ Anne Paul
2/ Margaret Kelly
3/ Jackie McMonagle or Roisin Lynch

But
Open women
1/ Anne Paul (Again)
2/ Cathy McCourt

Therefore Anne Paul will get the overall prize (assuming she runs in Muff) and Margaret Kelly moves into 1st position in the Vets and so on….

Also in the Male Vets
Tight battle between Declan McCarty(V45) , Gerry O'Doherty(V50) and Christy McMonagle(V60) for 2 places, but Declan (like Anne Paul) is also in contention in the Open category along with Colin Loughery, Colin Watson and Marty Gormley who have all currently completed 4 races.

So, Muff is going to be the big showdown!!! The border is always a good place for this sort of thing...... Derry and Donegal cowboys and all that....!!
