Kieran Hurley (Photo: Eoghan Furey) Kieran Hurley and Cathy McCourt were the winners of the third race of the Furey Insurance Services 5K Series at Culmore. The race which was sponsored by the Culmore Festival Committee drew an entry of 51 runners despite a clash of dates with other fixtures. Hurley from the City of Derry club took the initiative from the gun and always looked to be in control of affairs throughout the 3.1 mile event. At the tape the Corkman had 19 seconds to spare over Declan Reed with a time of 16 minutes four seconds. Reed had run stride for stride with Foyle Valley clubmate Damian McGinty for most of the race before applying the coup-de-grace on the short homestraight to open up a three second margin. Another Valley man Sammy McAnaney (17:03) did enough to finish sixth overall to lift the veterans’ prize.
Surprisingly NW cross-country champion Michelle Strum put up little opposition as McCourt watched by her father, Olympic boxing medalist Jim McCourt, strode to a comfortable victory in 18:39. Omagh Harrier Strum was 14 seconds back with City’s Jackie McMonagle recording another personal best of 19:42 to take the bronze award.
