TONER AND CROSSAN TROT UP IN SECOND FUREY 5K
The Runners Get Ready for the Off Donegal athletes picked up the top prizes in an incident-packed second race of the Furey Insurance 5K Series and sponsored by Fitness First. Declan Reed was convinced that he was on the way to his first success in the Series as he entered what he thought was the final two hundred metres. But instead of finding the finish tape waiting at the line at the line he was told he had another lap to run after being given the wrong information by the officials at the end of the previous lap. Instead of being told he had two laps to run, the officials indicated that he was entering the final circuit. When confronted with the bad news the Foyle Valley man stepped off the course angry and disillusioned. Omagh Harrier Martin Cox took up the running and he led until about ten metres from the tape when he allowed Ivan Toner to sneak through for victory in 16 minutes eight seconds. Cox was a second back with Colin Roberts finishing strongly for third in 16:20 with Declan McCarthy in fifth taking the award for leading Master. Aileen Morrison suffered a similar fate to Declan Reed in the women’s race before dropping out with a lap to go. Helena Crossan took advantage to score a narrow six seconds victory over Cathy McCourt in 18:33. Second place put McCourt, who was watched by her father Olympic boxing medallist Jim McCourt, top of the overall standings after a victory in the opening race. Teenager Gráinne Neary took third in 19:54 with Jackie McMonagle the leading lady veteran just a further four seconds back.
