Anna Boyle was the toast of Irish athletics after her victory yesterday in the 60 metres at the Irish National Indoor Athletics Championships at the Odyssey.

Although the meeting at the state of the art facility may not attracted a huge attendance it was probably the finest afternoon of indoor athletics ever seen in Ireland.

The 22-year-old Dunloy sprinter overcame possibly the strongest field ever assembled for the event in this country to clock a personal best 7.32 seconds.  The mark was a new Northern Ireland record, a National Irish record and a Championship Best Performance.

To emphasise the quality of the field, Amadine Aliou Affoue in second place set a new Ivory Coast mark of 7.34 while Emily Maher in third with 7.36 seconds was also one-hundredths of a second inside the old Irish record.

The Ballymena & Antrim athlete leaves for the Commonwealth Games in Australia this morning with her confidence at an all-time high.

“I would not rule it out,” said Boyle when asked if she could make the final of the 100 metres in Melbourne.

“That is of course if the travel goes well and I can acclimatise quickly. I’ll know after I run in a warm-up meeting on March 9.”

Derval O’Rourke was also in record breaking form in the 60 metres hurdles taking almost a tenth of a second off her own national record with a 7.90 seconds clocking.  The flame-haired Cork woman overcame the challenge of Jamaica’s current world 100 metres silver-medallist to set herself up as a potential finallist at next month’s World Indoors in Moscow.

Current World Indoor Champion Alleyne Francique from Grenada did not disappoint with a smooth 46.19 seconds victory in the 400 metres.

Ireland’s European 400 metres gold medallist David Gillick dropped down a distance to thrill the crowd with a hard fought win in the 200 metres in 21.45 seconds.

Trecia Smith of Jamaica won the clash of the titans in the women’s triple jump.  The World Champion prevailed over Sudan’s World Indoor silver-medallist Yamile Aldama by five centimetres with a Championship Best Performance of 14.23m.

Another athlete to set new meeting figures was James Nolan who showed why he has been Ireland’s top miler over the past decade with a smooth victory in the 1500 metres in a 3:44.12.  The Tullamore man showed a clean pairs of heels to Ireland’s top juniors David McCarthy and Ciaran O’Lionaird who both went under three minutes 50 seconds for the first time.

Perhaps the loudest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for 17-year-old Bangor sprinter Amy Foster who picked up her first national senior title in the 200 metres in a swift 24.89 seconds.

Saturday night’s session was also eventful with Joe McAlister picking up his second title in eight days after his triumph in last weekend’s NI/Ulster Senior Cross-Country.  The St. Malachy’s athlete looked like he was going to be run out of the medals at the halfway point of the 3000 metres but rallied to come home a very impressive winner in 8:16.95.

Slovakia’s Jana Veldakova produced a world class leap of 6.44 metres to win the long jump and dragged 17-year-old Waterford girl Kelly Proper in second place to a new Irish indoor record of 6.19 metres.

Two silver medals and a share of a third plus a bronze was the healthy haul for City of Derry at the Irish National Indoor Championships at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

Tom Carey was rewarded for the trip home from Cambridgeshire with a runner-up spot in the 60 metres hurdles in 8.19 seconds.  However, it was only by one-hundredth of a second that the Irish U23 400 metres hurdles champion missed out on gold after a poor start.

Jason Smyth showed no sign of a lack of racing in his first competition as he won both his first round and semi-final heats of the 60 metres.

In the final the 18-year-old was fast away and looked to be in the lead at halfway.  However, at that point and with a major upset on the cards, the Eglinton youngster tensed up and slipped back to fourth at the tape in 6.95 seconds.

Nevertheless, with two of the top three being international guests, the double European Paralympics champion was able to claim his first national senior medal.

David McCarthy, trained at City of Derry, added to the local success story by finishing second in the senior 1500 metres with a sensational 3:48.24 timing.

Kiara Ferguson showed that she has a bright future in the event when she took a bronze medal in the triple jump.

St. Columb's College student Simon Herron had his best jump of the winter, 1.95m, to take second in the high jump.

There had also been plenty of local interest on Saturday night.  Strabane’s Aaron Crawford ran an excellent 23.25 seconds to narrowly miss the 200 metres “B” final while Kevin O’Doherty, now coached by Stephen Maguire, also impressed with a 23.46 seconds timing.

At the start of busy weekend City’s Rudi Moore ran 23.39 seconds for third place in his heat and one place ahead of another Strabane man Seamus McAteer who credited with a modest 24.83 seconds.

Moore had earlier run 7.30 seconds in the 60 metres but failed to register a mark in the long jump.

Aaron Carlyle was well off qualifying for the 400 metres finals taking third place in his heat with a 51.93 seconds clocking.  Patrick O’Donnell was even further off the mark with a fourth place in 54.04 seconds.

Pajo Hamilton competed well in his heat of the 800 metres and was rewarded with his first sub two minutes clocking indoors with a 1:59.99 mark.

Other local athletes found the going tough at national level competition and may realise this is not the ideal place to compete unless they are in full fitness and up to the standard.

Ronan Doherty was timed at 58.58 seconds for 400 metres and managed only 4.56 metres in the long jump.

Derry’s three representatives in the women’s long jump fared little better with Seanan Heaney (10th – 4.64m), Kiara Ferguson (13th – 4.39m) and Stephanie Keys (15th – 4.30m).
