Anne Paul was third across the line in the F40 category with a 2:59:04 timing making her the fifth Irish woman home.

"I was well pleased with this as my longest run was 17 miles and I had no idea what was going to happen ..... the rain was relentless and I found that when it finally dried up and the sun came out at 20miles I got a new lease of life," Anne told the Spartans'  website.

"Obviously the last two miles were hard but I think there is maybe another few minutes of improvement possible," concluded our distance doyenne.

Good news for the club is that Anne will be back in cross country action as soon as she has had sufficient time to recover from her travails in Dublin.

For the fourth consecutive year Gary Crossan was the first Irish man home taking thirteenth overall in 2:23:19 with club mate Pauric McKinney breathing down his neck just ten seconds back in fourteenth.

“The conditions made it very tough, it wasn’t too cold but the wind and rain made it tough in places.  My club mate Pauric McKinney made it even tougher but I must say I’m pleased being first Irishman for the fourth year in a row,” said a tired but satisfied Crossan minutes after the finish.

Martin Gormley, a 39 year old education officer, exceeded all expectations to take the third scoring spot with an excellent timing of 2:43:20, a massive improvement of 13 minutes on his previous best.

Among the Derry runners to perform well were James Crampsey (2:44:51), Gary O’Donnell (2:54:33), Martin Sheehan (2:54:33) and Paddy Nicell (2:56:38).

I know all Spartans will wish to echo my congratulations to our Donegal neighbours on their resounding successes in Dublin.  Not only are they fine athletes on the sports field but also first class sportsmen and women off it.
