30th July REPORT 28th July 08SPARTAN MEN FINISH 4TH IN NATIONAL LEAGUE

Despite a sparkling double from Tom Carey and some fine individual performances City of Derry men just missed out on promotion at the Division One Final of the National Track and Field League in Tullamore.

When the scores were totted up at the end of six hours of intense competition, City had scored 104 points to take fourth place but seven points shy of the second spot which would have guaranteed promotion to the Premier Division next year.

Winners of the match were Ballymena & Antrim with 116 points, five ahead of St. Abban’s (Laois) with a County Galway selection another four points back in third.

Carey followed up his first National Senior title seven days earlier by winning both the 110m Hurdles (14.76) and 400m Hurdles (53.95) events.

Colin Roberts also took maximum points in winning the 3000m Steeplechase in 10:07.42 while Irish Schools’ Senior Triple Jump champion Igho Diegbe showed his versatility by taking second places in the 100m (11.44) and Shot Putt (9.65m).

Pajo Hamilton also claimed a runner-up spot in the 800m (1:58.82) as did Declan Burns (4:19.97) in the 1500m and Simon Herron (13.48m) in the Triple Jump.

However in the end, too many weak events cost the Spartans dearly and they will now have to wait until 2009 to secure that elusive spot in the Premier League.

Meanwhile a sizeable number of spectators turned up at Santry Stadium on Friday night for the Brother Ireland Morton Memorial Meeting to commemorate the World records set at the venue 50 years ago.

Ronnie Delany who ran in the World record mile of Herb Elliott and Eamon Coghlan were guests of honour as the appreciative crowd enjoyed an excellent night of athletics.

Unfortunately Irish champion Eileen O’Keefe had to sit out an excellent women’s Hammer competition because of injury. Three throwers exceeded 70 metres with Germany’s Betty Heidler claiming the winner’s medal with a throw of 72.43m.

American Rob Myers added his name to the illustrious list of Morton Mile winners with a time of 3:56.23 after taking the initiative at the bell. Appropriately, no less than nine athletes were inside the once magical four minutes.

Derry Athletics Development Officer Elaine McCaffrey finished seventh in the 400m in 55.96 behind Jamaica’s Rosemary White who won in 51.53 seconds.
In Belgium both Amy Foster (200m/23.75) and Kelly McNeice (1500m/4:11.91) recorded personal best performances.
