Jason Smyth in action at Irish Schools (Photo: Seamus Costello) City of Derry teenage athletes Jason Smyth and Kiara Ferguson both picked up medals at the Northern Ireland & Ulster Athletics Championships at the Mary Peters Track. After easing through in his heat, Smyth lined up in the 100 metres final facing his stiffest opposition of the season in Irish record-holder Paul Brizzel and Idrissa Samou from Burkina Faso. The Eglinton flyer matched strides with his more experienced rivals for 60 metres before McKee pulled away to win in 10.30 seconds. Sanou, a World Cup relay bronze medallist, took second in 10.45 with Smyth registering his fastest time to date of 10.56 seconds. Unfortunately, on account of the following wind being over the legal limit the mark will not count for record purposes, the Irish Junior record being 10.61 seconds, or as a qualifying mark for the World Junior Championships in Beijing in August. Ulster Schools’ champion Kiara Ferguson added a massive 45 centimetres to her personal best with a clearance of 11.05 metres to take a surprise silver in the women’s triple jump. The St. Cecilia’s schoolgirl overcame among others Laura Loughlin from Lisburn who had pipped her by a mere centimetre for the Irish Schools’ gold medal just seven days earlier. Training partner and City of Derry clubmate Stephanie Keys took fifth with a best mark of 10.37 metres in the event won by Tirchonnaill’s Mary McLoone with a 12.41m effort. However, the best local performance of the day failed to land Pajo Hamilton a medal in the men’s 800 metres. Six days earlier, Hamilton had brought his best down to 1:56 to win the Leinster title in Tullamore. He took another two seconds off that with a 1:54.67 clocking but found it only good enough for fourth place behind former British junior international Raymond Adams who won in 1:51.18. Other City athletes in action included Diarmuid Grant (4:03.82) who sixth in the 1500 metres and Dara Furey (17:44.04), eighth in the 5000 metres. Simon Herron representing St. Columb’s College was fifth in the High Jump with a clearance of 1.85 metres and Lifford’s Mark McHugh took fifth in the Shot Putt and seventh in the Discus. Former Javelin champion Damian Crawford from the Strabane Track Club was fourth in his speciality event as well as sixth in the Discus. The Javelin also featured three other Strabane men; Daniel Mullan (fifth), Aaron Crawford (6th) and Sean McBride (7th). In Watford Gary Murray improved his seasonal best at the British Milers’ Club Grand Prix with a 3:43.88 timing for 12th in the 1500 metres A race. In the B race David McCarthy ran an outdoor personal best of 3:50.82 for 13th place just missing out on the World Junior qualifying time of 3:48.00.
