City Squads in Ballyclare Another fine run from Conor Bradley inspired City of Derry me to second place in the McConnell Shield at Ballyclare. The 18-year-old student who seems to improve with every run, timed his efforts perfectly on the surprisingly firm going to take fourth place overall in a time of 27 minutes 18 seconds. South African Sandile Lembetha who ran the Dublin Marathon last Monday extended his stay in the country long enough to take the honours in what is essentially a competition for novices and masters. Lembetha shunned covered in 26 minutes 27 seconds. Dave Morwood, benefiting from an eleventh hour revision of the eligibility rules which allowed athletes of 35 years and over to compete instead of 40 and above, took second in 27:10. Mark Greenwood was another four seconds back in third. North Belfast Harriers packed all six scorers in the first 28 finishers to lift the team trophy from City of Derry and Willowfield. The other City scorers were Aaron Doherty (7th), Declan McCarthy (20th), Dominic Hazlett (29th), Dermot Connolly (34th) and Pajo Hamilton (45th). Further down the field Dara Furey (47th) and Gerry Lynch (68th) provided valuable support. Shelagh Bodkin continued her good early season form with a close-up fourth place in the women’s race. The Altnagelvin dietician covered the two miles distance in 12:08 with City club mate Suzanne McGilloway thirty seconds back in eighth. Jackie McMonagle took tenth in 13:30 and Linda Hall was 22nd in 15:38. Up front Suzanne McCormick got back on the winning trail after a surprise reverse at the hands of Julie Butler in Comber two weeks earlier. The Lagan Valley had a comfortable 16 seconds margin at the tape over club mate Maria Skelton with Kerry Harty another three seconds back in third.
Kieran Carlin from the host club, Finn Valley, was third with City of Derry’s Gregory Roberts making his seasonal debut in fourth. Letterkenny took the team title for the second year in a row after 19 years of domination by Finn Valley. Blue skies for Gregory as he takes fourth. However, the Valley continued its reign in the women’s race that now extends almost a quarter a century after filling the first three places. Cloddagh McCool outsprinted 40-year-old Noleen Porter to take the individual gold with former champion Catriona McGranaghan back in third.
