New Record for Pauric McKinney

Letterkenny AC’s Pauric McKinney set a new course record of 14.59 to take

victory in Friday night’s Lifford 5K Road Race, writes Ciaran O'Donnell.

The Ballindrait native bettered this previous best by two seconds and this

win made it two on the bounce in the space of six days, having claimed

victory in the Buncrana 10K the previous Saturday.

McKinney had Finn Valley’s Kieran Carlin for company for the first of the

three loops around the border town, but when he put he made decisive break

on the climb second time around and opened up a gap which he gradually

increased to 13 seconds before the end. Third was James Flanagan of

Letterkenny in 15:24.

The senior women’s race was a closely fought affair, with Donegal marathon

record holder, Helena Crossan winning by eight seconds from Finn Valley’s

Teresa McGloin, with Margaret Synott-Kelly third in 19:16. First veteran man was Dominic Bonner of Finn Valley who placed 6th overall

in 15:46, with Vera Haughey of Tir Chonaill the quickest veteran woman in

20:27 (53rd overall).

The next round of the Mizuno Grand Prix takes place on Friday night with

Finn Valley hosting a 5K at 7.30m pm.
