There was an impressive turnout at annual Kesh 10k road race, writes Karen Dolan, which was generously sponsored by Mervyn Duncan of Clareview Leisure & Caravan park. As in previous years it attracted athletes from all over Northern Ireland but this year there were several cross border entrants and indeed one Australian. Nigel Greer (Dromore) and Paul Carron (Enniskillen) battled closely for pole position until the halfway stage when Nigel pulled away from Paul and continued to widen the gap until finishing first in a time of 34.46. In third place was Thomas Peoples from Enniskillen in a time of 38.04. In the ladies race Joan Flanagan, who recently moved to Enniskillen, led from the start to finish in a time of 41.37. Rebecca Burns and Maria Moss were 2nd and 3rd ladies respectively. The male veteran categories were as usual very popular, in particular the male over 40 category. This was won by Frank Molloy from Irvinestown with Alan Houston (Enniskillen) less than a minute behind and Keith Nixon in 3rd. In the younger age groups, Simon Galloway was the first under 18 male as well as being joint first local (Kesh) man with Albert Law. Lucy Parkinson also had the joint honour of being the first girl aged under 16 and the first local female, whilst Stephen Duncan, international showjumper, showed his sporting versatility by finishing first in the under 16 category. Several people who chose to walk the 10k route were presented with special certificates when refreshments were supplied for the athletes later at a prize-giving in the Mayfly Inn.
