30th July 08THREPEATS FOR ROBERTS AND PAUL IN THE BOG

Gregory Roberts scored his third victory in this year’s Furey Insurances 5K Series when he showed a clean pair of heels to the field in the later stages of the Jog in the Bog.

There was also a hat-trick of victories for Anne Paul as City of Derry athletes dominated the event taking the majority of the awards.

Roberts was one of four athletes who very quickly broke away from the field on the first lap of the tight Lecky Road course deep in the Bogside.

Emmett McGinty was doing most of the forcing with Roberts and his brother Colin along with Declan Reed happy to track the UUJ student.

Although looking the most comfortable of the four Reed was first to drop off the pace allowing Gregory Roberts to move to the front. The gap quickly opened and although chased manfully by McGinty throughout the final kilometre the City athlete was able to cross the line with a nine second advantage in 15 minutes 26 seconds.

McGinty with the aid of fevered support from his family managed to hold on to second by a mere second from Colin Roberts who was the leading Master.

Declan Reed (16:04) took fourth from the leading M45 competitor Declan McCarthy (16:23) with Sean Laverty (16:24) taking the M40 prize and completing a clean sweep of the top six places by City of Derry athletes.

Other category awards went to Springwell’s Gerry O’Doherty (M50/17:22) and Christy McMonagle (M60/19:54).

Anne Paul took control of the women’s race from the gun and by the end of the 3.1 miles had built a comfortable 24 seconds lead over perennial rival, North Belfast Harrier Cathy McCourt. Paul’s time of 18:05 placed her 16th of the record 86 finishers.

Third place went to Letterkenny’s Margaret Kelly (18:31) with Karen Crossan (19:42) in fourth claiming the Under 20 category victory.

Springwell’s Sarah Chestnutt (21:31) was the leading F40 and Foyle Valley’s Kate Meehan (22:35) claimed the F45 trophy.

Local road runners face another busy weekend with the Ards Charity 5 Miles and the Rathmelton 5K on Friday night; the Muff 5K concludes the Furey Insurance 5K Series on Saturday with the Killybegs 5K listed for Monday.
