Diarmuid Grant will looking
for his second victory in the Furey Insurances 5K Series when
when he lines up in tonight’s Jog in the Bog from the Gasyard
Field After suffering an unexpected reverse at the hands of
Stephen Duncan in the Strabane 10K, Diarmuid Grant got back
to winning ways when he led the field home in the Cranford 4.2
Mile Road Race last weekend.
At the finish line the City of Derry athlete
had 34 seconds to spare over Letterkenny’s Ciaran Doherty after
covering what is a very hilly course in 20 minutes 56 seconds.
Grant won the fourth fixture at Balliniska
in a fast 15:17 before sitting out the last race at Culmore.
Main opposition is likely to come from Gregory
Roberts who has already two wins in the Series under his belt
from the Bay Road and Buncrana.
Anne Paul who won in Culmore and Buncrana will
lock horns again with Cathy McCourt an earlier winner at Balliniska.
Meanwhile the three Omagh Harriers on duty
for Ireland at the European Mountain Running Championships in
Zell am Harmersbach, Germany all acquitted themselves with flying
colours.
Athletes from 26 countries competed in the
event with the Tyrone club boasting a representative in three
of the four categories.
Angela Speight had a tremendous run to be first
Irish finisher in the Senior Women’s race taking 45th overall
to helping Ireland to 15th place of the competing countries.
Northwest cross country champion Stephen Duncan
worked his way through in the later stages of the men’s race
to lead the Irish men home in 34th with Ireland taking its highest
ever finishing place of 12th in the team contest.
The third Omagh runner Conor Moore was also
prominent throughout in the Junior Men’s race before ending
up second Irish in 42nd with Ireland tenth in the team listings.
There was success too for local athletes at
the second part of the National Juvenile Track and Field Championships
at Tullamore. Strabane’s Ben MCGillan was the winner of the
Boys’ U16 title with an excellent leap of 12.00 metres.
There was a double bronze performance for Jamie
Herron in the Girls’s U17 age group after taking third place
in both the Triple Jump (10.78m) and High Jump (1.55m).
Georgina Brown added a silver medal to the
City of Derry collection when she finished second in the U19
Javelin with a best effort of 38.01m. And Andy Bolster made
it four medals for the young Spartans with a silver in the Boy’s
U14 200 metres clocking an excellent 25.83 seconds.
