The Jog in the Bog 5K turned out to be a canter for City of Derry’s Allan Bogle who won by almost a minute in a time of 15 minutes 14 seconds.  Seventeen year old Conor Bradley moved clear of the chasing pack in the closing stages to take the runner-up spot in 16:06 with Seamus Kealey a further eight seconds back in the third.

Dermot Connolly’s return after injury continued successfully by taking the prize for the first master in 12th position overall with a 17:31 clocking.

Letterkenny’s Margaret Synnott was equally impressive lifting the women’s prize after taking 21st place of the 55 finishers and dipping under 18 minutes by a solitary second.

Willowfield’s Gareth Arnott emerged victorious in Stuart & Gault 10 Miles at Ballyclare in a modest 55 minutes 50 seconds.  Gault was involved in a three-man struggle for most of the way before putting seven seconds between himself and runner-up David Brady at the tape.  Brady’s North Belfast team mate Kevin Kearney was third in 56:18.

Beechmount’s Louise McClean was a class apart in the women’s race winning by almost three minutes in 64:37.

With the World Mountain Running Championships in New Zealand just a month away, Alan McKibbin took the opportunity to get in some race practice on the hills.  The Newcastle athlete showed he is top form by dominating the Lurig Challenge Run in Cushendall after scorching up and down the 1200 foot mountain in 27 minutes 53 seconds.  Deon McNeilly (29:36) and Gary Bailey (30:02) claimed the minor spots.

Alwynne Shannon, showing no after-affects of a race in the Alps the previous weekend, made it a Newcastle double by taking the women’s race in 36:53 for the 3.5 mile event.

There was also track and field action with the Northern Ireland Veterans’ Track and Field Championships decided at the Mary Peters Track.  Alan McCullough, the leading local competitor in the Belfast Marathon in each of the last four years, celebrated his entry to the masters’ ranks with a gun-to-tape victory in the 5000 metres.

The Willowfield Harrier recorded an impressive 15 minutes 22.00 seconds with City of Derry’s Declan McCarthy outsprinting Richard Rodgers from Newcastle for the silver medal.

Former European masters’ champion Karen Marshall was a class apart in the women’s 3000 metres winning comfortably in 11:03.46.

Shelagh Bodkin took both 800 and 1500 metres titles in the F35 age group with 2:25/5:08 timings.
