Jason (Centre) On the Way to Victory in 200 Metres (Photo: Eamon Harvey) Jason Smyth retained both his titles at the KitKat Irish Schools Athletics Championships at Tullamore. It was the third year in succession that the Limavady Grammar School student had done the double in the showpiece meeting. Although not looking as sharp as he was at the Ulster Schools’ finals two weeks earlier, Smyth nevertheless won both Senior Boys’ 100 and 200 metres with the minimum of effort. The Limavady Grammar School pupil opened with a 21.96 seconds clocking in the 200 metres in which he hit the homestraight slightly in the lead before pulling away for a comfortable winning margin. Smyth had been expected to Derek O’Connor’s 21.2 seconds Schools record stretching back to 1982 but suffered into the headwind in the second half of the race. Later he added the 100 metres gold but only after two false starts which seemed to have an unsettling effect on the Eglinton 18-year-old. “First of all the lad in lane two false-started,” explained Coach Stephen Maguire. “Then the athlete in lane one got disqualified when he tried to jump the gun but there was a lot of messing around which seemed to un-nerve Jason and he was happy in the end just to do enough to win.” There were quite a number of other local athletes who managed to on the medal podium. Maguire’s other charge Kevin O’Doherty also performed well to take the bronze medal in the Senior Boys’ 400 metres with a personal best clocking of 50.78 seconds. It was only the third serious competition at the distance for the Strabane lad who goes to St. Columb’s College. Martin Penrose went one better in winning the Junior Boys’ 1200 metres Walk to give Holy Cross College in Strabane its first success at this level. Kiera Ferguson from St. Cecilia’s was unlucky to lose out on the gold in the Senior Girls’ Triple Jump by a single centimetre. Laura Laughlin from Banbridge Academy, whom Ferguson had beaten in winning the Ulster title two weeks previous, turned the tables with a 10.67 metres effort to clinch the title. Another silver medal came from Royal and Prior’s Ian Ward who showed a tactical naiveté in the Intermediate Boys’ 1500 metres but willed have been pleased with his time of four minutes 2.07 seconds. Top performance of the meeting came from Kelly Proper , a student at St. Paul’s in Waterford, who set a new national junior record in the Long Jump with a 6.08 metres clearance. Gary Murray also made a good start to the season when he finished second in the Ronnie Delaney Trophy organised by the Irish Milers’ Club in conjunction with the Schools’ meeting. Murray who now lives in Newtowncunningham was timed at three minutes 45.14 seconds, less than a half a second behind winner Mark Christie (3:44.63) with Mark Kenneally third in 3:45.55.
