9th Oct 08HOSPICE RUNNERS COMPLETE GREAT NORTH RUN

Over 50 local runners took place in the Great North Run in Newcastle with many taking advantage of the perfect weather conditions to record personal bests for the half-marathon distance

Dara Furey who led the local contingent at the Great North Run Half Marathon in Newcastle.

Buncrana man Dara Furey was the first local finisher coming home in 84 min 3 secs.

Up at the sharp end of the action Irish athlete Martin Fagan finished a very creditable sixth. The 25-year-old Mullingar Harrier was the first European across the line in a new personal-best time of 1 hour 2 minutes 20 seconds (01:02:20).

The performance in some way atones for Fagan dropping out of the Olympic Marathon in Beijing with just six kilometres remaining.

The race was won by Olympic bronze medallist Tsegay Kebede of Ethiopia in 59:45 after leading from start to finish and came home just under two minutes ahead of compatriot Gebre Gebremariam.

The woman's race was won by Ethiopia's Gete Wami in a time of 68:51 after a tight struggle with Kenya’s Magdalene Mukunzi and Britain's Jo Pavey who finished third.

On Saturday Ireland’s David Campbell finished strongly to take second in the Great North Mile behind Britain’s Mo Farah. The Kildare man clocked 4:12.7 to Farah’s 4:12.1 with Kenyan Brimin Kipruto another three-tenths of a second back in third.

Britain’s Lisa Dobriskey won the women’s mile in 4:39.1 while there was a Kenyan double in the Two Miles through Eliud Kipchoge (8.42) and Vivian Cheruiyot (9:40).

Due to a hamstring strain suffered in Beijing, Jason Smyth was not able to compete in the 100m race added to the programme for the first time. In his absence Britain’s scored an impressive win in 10.25 seconds.
