Updated 4th June ...28 May 08 Greg Roberts and Ann Paul Triumph in biggest ever Buncrana 5k, 180 finishers. Series Race 3

Results Photos Well done to all who ran last night. The race was a huge success with a record number of 180 finishers. Congratulations to all the prize winners and a special congratulations to all those whose first race is was. Well done!

We were honoured to have the president of the Northern Ireland Athletics Federation Mr Brian Downing in attendance and also to have Mr Sean Furey, MD of Sean Furey Insurances Ltd, who is not only the sponsor of the Buncrana 5k but is also the sponsor of the Furey Insurances 5k series 2008. Brian and Sean presented the prizes.

Part of the reason for the big numbers is the fact that the race is on two different Series of races in the NW. As well as being the flagship race of the Furey Insurances 5K series(Derry and Inis Eoghain) it is also part of the hugely successful
Donegal Athletics Board Brian McCormick Sports and Leisure Mizuno Grand Prix 2008 which is a series of 26 races which take place throughout Donegal during the summer months.

A final thank you to everyone who helped out with the race. Neart le Chéile!

ROBERTS KICKS OFF LOCAL ROAD SEASON WITH VICTORY

Gregory Roberts put down a marker that he is set to dominate the local road running scene this season with a convincing victory in the opening race of the Furey Insurances 5K Series.

The City of Derry Spartan led from gun to tape on the fast Bay Road circuit as 61 contestants of varying abilities turned up to shake off the cobwebs after what seemed a long and wet winter.

However, despite the bright conditions a cold easterly wind put paid to any hope of fast times with Roberts recording only a modest clocking of 15 minutes 59 seconds for the event sponsored by the University of Ulster Magee .

Clubmate Aaron Doherty ran shoulder to shoulder with the Templemore man in the early stages but slipped back in the later stages to finish 17 seconds behind the winner.

Newcomer Colin Watson made an impressive debut taking third in 17:04 with City’s Kevin Carlin the leading Junior (U20) another five seconds back in fourth.

Ivan Hrastic (17:30) from Slovenia and Letterkenny’s Martin Gormley (17:41) who was the leading veteran completed the top half dozen.

Other veteran category prizes went to Danny Ryan (M35/17:56), Paul Kelly (M45/19:46), Peter Lilburn (M50/19:20), Mal McCausland (M55/19:52), Christy McMonagle (M60/20:13).

Olivia McCullagh turned in a storming last lap to win the ladies’ race by the best part of a minute in a an impressive 19 minutes 27 seconds.

One of the top Juniors in Ireland only a few years ago, the Greencastle woman’s has been in the doldrums for a few seasons but showed signs that she is now on the way back.

Ever-consistent Jackie McMonagle was second lady in 20 minutes 14 seconds to make it a Spartan one-two while third spot was taken by Inishowen’s Theresa Doherty in 21:34.
