Irish 10K track champion Joe McAllister was the winner of the race in 30 minutes 51 seconds after racing clear in the final three kilometres. Alan McCullough who coincidentally had taken the NI 10K track title just seven days previous finished second in 31:40 with Dave Morwood from the host club nailing down the bronze medal spot with a 32:31 clocking. Grant’s time of 33:04 was more than respectable given the severity of the course and the warm balmy conditions. It was only the second race for the former St. Columb’s College schoolboy star following a calf injury sustained in the Queens University 5K back in April. Surprisingly, Grant had chosen the Danny McDaid 15K in Letterkenny last month and had come through the test with flying colours after finishing in the top three. Now furthering his studies at the University of Ulster in Jordanstown after a sojourn in the Uinted States, Grant will make a prompt return to action. He is lined up to take his place on the City of Derry relay team for next Saturday’s Waterside Half Marathon. With Allan Bogle away on international duty with the British orienteering squad and Gregory Roberts going the full distance in the main race, City mentors will be looking to the Buncrana man to strengthen a weakened squad. Cork man Ciaran Hurley makes his debut in the red and black while master athlete Declan McCarthy is likely to be named as the third man. Foyle Valley’s Sammy McAnaney was also in action at Roughfort and finished 15th, collecting the M45 prize. Top master’s award went to Peter Smith from Portstewart, seventh overall in 33:49. Ireland’s World Student Games representative Jill Shannon was a runaway winner of the women’s race in 36:37 with Breige Connolly second almost four minutes back in 40:28. Earlier, Paul Rowan had won the Monaghan 5K on Friday night in a fast 14 minutes 49 seconds. Willowfield clubmate Deane Fisher was 14 seconds back in second with Abbey’s promising junior Paul Pollock third in 15:20. Omagh Harrier Julie Butler notched up her seventh consecutive road race victory when she was first woman across the line in 17:10, a mere second outside her best time for the distance.
