Pauric McKinney (303) leads from Allan Bogle and Brian Campbell

City of Derry men’s squad picked up their third team success of the winter when they were comfortable winners of the Northwest Cross Country Championships sponsored by Bob Mullan Motors Ltd at Gransha.

Noel McMonagle’s men had earlier in the season scored convincing back to back wins in Ballyclare and Coleraine.

Allan Bogle, denied an individual victory by Willowfield’s Brian Campbell and Pauric McKinney from the Letterkenny club, laid the foundations for a momentous win with a fine third place overall.

Team mate Diarmuid Grant who was breathing down Bogle’s neck early in the race held on for fourth spot while Cork man Kieran Hurley had his best run in a City vest since moving north twelve months ago to take sixth.

In tenth, Colin Roberts sealed an important win for the Spartans in advance of the major championships in the next two months with a battling performance.

City’s score of 23 points was 21 superior to Finn Valley with Letterkenny another nine points back in third.

Local athletes also did well in the masters’ age groups with Declan McCarthy being the third M40 to finish while Dermot Connolly went one better in the M45 section to take second behind Finn Valley’s Mark Connolly.

Omagh’s Brendan Montague was the leading M50 while City Secretary Gerry Lynch traded in his clipboard for running shoes to win the M60 grade prize in impressive style.

City’s women made it a double by taking the ladies’ team award placing their three scorers in the top five finishers.  Anne Paul retained her individual title to make it three successes out of four in the event for the erudite Portrush-based woman.

Shelagh Bodkin finished strongly for second with Lagan Valley’s Rhona Harkins returning to her native heath to take third. Karen Dolan was the third Spartan scorer after moving through the field in the later stages

Spectators were surprised to spot a Soap star in the field following an unexpected late entry from Tony Audenshaw aka Bob Hope of Emmerdale fame.

The Wool Pack barman performed well to cover the heavy six kilometer course in 27 minutes 30 seconds.
