Stephen Duncan scored his second victory in five days when he timed his effort to perfection to make it first past the post in the Dessie’s Run 10K at Templemore. The Omagh Harrier allowed Allan Bogle from the host club, City of Derry, to make all the running before pouncing as the pair entered the final 400 metres. Duncan’s time of 31 minutes 46 seconds was his fastest of the season. The Omagh Leisure Attendant had six seconds to spare at the tape over Bogle while Gregory Roberts impressed with a personal best 32:29 in third.
The masters’ race was equally exciting with
three men fighting out the top spot. Declan McCarthy made the early pace
from Paddy Nicell and Sammy McAnaney.
It was also Julie Butler’s second win in five days after, like Duncan, winning the Creggan 5K Trail Run in Greencastle, Tyrone last Friday night. The Omagh teacher was never in any danger of being beaten after leading from the gun and crossed the line in an excellent 36:05. Over four minutes back, Shelagh Bodkin claimed the runner-up spot in 40:10 with Rhona Harkens taking third in 40:42. Julie Butler - Well Clear. Although Allan Bogle improved his 2004 time by over two minutes with a 31:52 clocking, the Eglinton man was less than happy with his performance. “I was pleased with the race time but not the result,” said Bogle afterwards. “The time was better than my previous best of 32:04 at Dessie's Run last year but the result I feel showed my inexperience at 10km racing, I led the whole way only to be beaten in the last 400 metres, Stephen Duncan ran an excellent tactical race.” The GB orienteering international also blamed a less than ideal preparation going into the race. “Aside from my poor tactics, I started my new teacher training course yesterday in Coleraine and I have just returned from Ukraine where last week I was fourth in an orienteering World Ranking event. “I also won a race on Ukraine's national day last week over my specialist distance despite being sick with what I thought was food poisoning, but it turned out to be radiation poisoning from swimming in the river that runs through Kiev and starts in Chernobyl!” Corrections etc Welcome
