Highlight of a busy weekend’s athletics was Jason Smyth taking a second gold medal on the penultimate day of the European Paralympics in Espoo, Finland. The Eglinton 18-year-old scorched to a new world T13 record of 21.84 seconds to complete a sprint double initiated earlier in the week with victory in the 100 metres. Held in poor conditions, a 0.9 metre per second headwind did not stop Smyth from rushing into an early lead over his main rival, Royal Mitchell of the United States. The City of Derry athlete was able to relax down the home straight as he eased away for a comfortable victory eclipsing his own world record of 22.06 seconds set when finishing fourth in the national championships last month. The American was well-beaten taking the silver medal in 22.48 seconds. At home in the NI decathlon championship at Antrim Forum, there was a bronze medal for Rudi Moore despite a disappointing second day performance. At the halfway point Moore was second with a score in excess of 3300 points but terrible conditions yesterday put paid to the expected 6500 score the Loughborough student had targeted. Reigning champion Edward Dunford successfully defended his title with a 7194 points tally, well clear of Moore’s 5323.
In the women’s race, Butler, sixth overall, impressed with a 16:28 timing from Olivia McCullagh (18:47) and Bernie Gribben (20:33).
Stephen Duncan Over in Donegal, the Brockagh 4 Miles was the penultimate race in the Donegal Grand Prix Series with victory going to James Flanagan in 21 minutes 15 seconds. The Ballyshannon man had 65 seconds to spare over Pat Hegarty with Gerry McMonagle a further three seconds back in third. Karen Dolan was the winner of the women’s race in 29:57. Rathlin Island was the venue for an arduous 10.9 mile race which despite cold and windy conditions attracted an entry of over 250 runners. City of Derry athlete Cathy Mc Court made a strong start to the hilly course mixing it at the front with the leading male competitors. At the halfway point, McCourt was already in the top ten and six minutes clear of the next woman. A determined run home saw the Lisburn-based woman move through to fifth overall in an excellent time of one hour 11 minutes and 48 seconds, beating the previous record by over a minute. However, an elated McCourt was soon brought back to earth with a jolt when Coach Clyde Anderson insisted as part of her cool down she should stand up to the waist in the icy cold waters of the Irish sea for 15 minutes! The race was part of Cathy’s build up for the next month’s World Mountain Running Championships in New Zealand where she represents Ireland. Details: Creggan 5K
