Senior
§ Services to youth athletics Chris Power A special award for all his work with the junior athletes and his work with the YAL.
· Most improved athlete. · Pajo Hamilton Has set major new PB's this season, 1.54 secs over 800m & 49.2 secs over 400m.
These performances gained him 4 th place in the Northern Ireland Senior 800m final and allowed him to make the All-Ireland 800m final(Reportedly the first Derry athlete ever to do so.) His 400m performances also gained him selection for the Northern Ireland U23 team. Notably, he successfully conquered the greatest fear that most sprinters have and joined all the tough nuts in the muck of the cross country circuit culminating in a Team medal in the clubs successful defence of its NI Junior title.
· Performance of the year. While there have been many outstanding performances this year in track & field, road running and cross country, one sticks out above the rest. Since running clubs have been organised in the city, one major trophy has eluded the best efforts of some cracking athletes and coaches. However, in February 2006, City of Derry AC managed to do what it had never been done and win the Holy Grail of NI Athletics; the Northern Ireland Mens Senior Cross country Team title. This performance has to stand out as the most impressive of the year, not only from a running point of view but from an organising and managing point of view. Actually getting all our top male runners to the line and in top shape. This award is presented to the Senior Mens cross country team.
· Club person of the year. Like all of these awards, there would be many worthy recipients within the club. However, as the saying goes "There can be only one". When one looks at all of the major trophies on display here it should be noted that never before have all 3 senior mens cross country team titles, Novice, Intermediate and Senior been held by the club at the one time, and never have all 5 trophies Ulster and Northern Ireland, been held by any club at the one time.
While all of these trophies have been won by different groups of athletes and many people where involved, one person is most responsible for this historic state of events. The coach of the majority of our senior distance athletes, Mr Noel McMonagle.
