City of Derry runners were in excellent form at the Rathmullan 5K although the major honours were claimed by Finn Valley pair Kieran Carlin and Clodagh McCool.

Carlin showed he had returned to his very best form to claim victory in the men’s race in 15 minutes 12 seconds.

The runner-up spot went to Letterkenny’s James Flanagan in 15:34 with another Finn Valley man, Martin O’Halloran, third another five seconds back.

Declan McCarthy in sixth was the first City athlete over the line to claim the runner-up prize in the M40 category.  McCarthy’s time of 16:04 also represented a personal best clocking for the distance from the 44-year-old accountant.

Gavin Stevenson showed no after affects of a quick dash from work as he took 14^th in 16:55.  Another man close to personal best figure was Waterside GP Dermot Connolly who was 17^th in 17:05.

Other Spartans who were happy with their night’s work were Oran McBride (17:39), Andy Breslin (18:10) and Gerry Lynch (18:20).

Clodagh McCool turned the women’s race into a procession as she led from gun to tape to record an impressive victory.

The Stranorlar woman’s winning time of 17:16 was one of the fastest recorded in the Northwest this year.  Letterkenny’s Helena Crossan was second in 18:02 with daughter Karen nailing down third spot with a 19:09 timing.

City’s Jackie McMonagle picked up the F35 prize finishing 49^th overall in a personal best 19:58 breaking 20 minutes for the distance for the first time.
